8 June 2026 – What have I learned today?

Acts chapter 4 verses 36-37 (NIV)

Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas (which means “son of encouragement”), sold a field he owned and brought the money and put it at the apostles’ feet.

Romans chapter 12 verses 5-8 (NIV)

“so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.”

Today was the first time I realised that Joseph, the Levite from Cyprus was actually Barnabas who I have a soft spot for.  This is because of the meaning of the name Barnabas. I don’t think we always fully appreciate the importance of encouragement, yet it is listed as one of the gifts of the Spirit. It was definitely a gift that Barnabas had. I think this record in Acts shows the beginning of his use of his God-given gift. Like all spiritual gifts, it developed through his obedience in its use.

Early Support: His act of selling his field and placing the money at the apostles’ feet established him as a key leader in the early church.

Mentorship: When Paul (then Saul) first came to Jerusalem, it was Barnabas who vouched for him and introduced him to the apostles.

Missionary Journeys: Paul and Barnabas partnered together on the first missionary journey, traveling and preaching the gospel throughout Barnabas’ home island of Cyprus and Asia Minor.

Barnabas allowed the Holy Spirit to deepen the gift he was given, and look what a difference that made to others. We must always be willing to support and encourage others, but more importantly we must be willing to be obedient in exercising whatever gift the Holy Spirit has chosen for us.

Dear Lord,

I have benefitted from the encouragement of others who, like Barnabas, have the gift of encouragement. Help me to faithfully exercise the gifts You have given me, for the benefit of others, and for Your Glory. I ask in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
