16 June 2026 – What have I learned today?

1 Kings chapter 2 verses 2-3 (NIV)

“I am about to go the way of all the earth,” he said. “So be strong, act like a man, and observe what the LORD your God requires: Walk in obedience to him, and keep his decrees and commands, his laws and regulations, as written in the Law of Moses. Do this so that you may prosper in all you do and wherever you go.

What wonderful final words David speaks to his son and successor, Solomon. He is passing on the baton to Solomon but he doesn’t burden Him with a long list of instructions or seek promises from him. He simply reminds him to obey God and follow His commands and that if he does that everything will fall into its rightful place as God intended.

We need to remember that if we are tempted to pass on a long to do list to anyone, and not necessarily at the end of our life either. We, or they, may be moving on to a new chapter in our lives. But the advice given by David stands the same for that too. That’s the advice and encouragement that’s worth passing on.

Dear Lord,

Help me not to make things too complicated when giving advice. David’s counsel to Solomon was the best. It still applies today. May I heed that advice myself as well as passing it on. I ask in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
