13 July 2026 – What have I learned today?

Psalm 84 verse 10 (NIV)

Better is one day in your courts

   than a thousand elsewhere;

  I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God

   than dwell in the tents of the wicked.

While the role of a doorkeeper might seem a lowly one, it carried significant responsibility and honour. Doorkeepers ensured the sanctity and security of God’s house.

Doorkeepers, often Levites, were appointed to guard the temple entrances, manage access, and perform various responsibilities such as collecting offerings, distributing resources, and even defending the temple in times of danger.

Spiritually, the role of a doorkeeper represents service, vigilance, and reverence. It highlights that proximity to God and participation in His work is more valuable than worldly power or wealth.

Do we have aspirations about what gift or role we would like to do for God? We need to always remember that the Holy Spirit assigns our gifts. We don’t get to pick and choose. Our responsibility is to use our gifts, whatever they are, for God’s glory.  And if we do so to the best of our ability, even if what we do seems insignificant to others, then we will know the blessing and favour of the LORD. Without doubt that is far more to be desired than seeking the attention and favour of others which can be so fickle and quickly fade.

Dear Lord,

Help me to do whatever You require of me to the best of my ability, even if no one else notices. I ask in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
