Amos chapter 9 verses 11-13 (NIV)
“The days are coming,” declares the Sovereign LORD,
“when I will send a famine through the land—
not a famine of food or a thirst for water,
but a famine of hearing the words of the LORD.
People will stagger from sea to sea
and wander from north to east,
searching for the word of the LORD,
but they will not find it. “In that day “the lovely young women and strong young men
will faint because of thirst.
Amos’ words here could easily be describing the state of our country today. So many of our young people struggling to make sense of their purpose and worth, and to find meaning in their lives. Most will have grown up knowing very little about the word of God, and the real truth that is found in the Bible. Whilst there is no outright ban of the sharing of God’s word as truth, there are more and more loopholes being found in an increasingly secular society to at best try to water it down, and if at all possible deny it’s power. As a result, people are spiritually starving or dying of thirst.
So the remedy is in our hands. In natural circumstances in times of famine or drought, food and drink is made available by those who have it. We therefore who have the word of God in our lives have a responsibility to share it with those in need. We can’t stand by and watch people who are spiritually starving to death.
Dear Lord,
Help me not to be a bystander but a carrier of Your Word in these days, so that the living water of Christ reaches those who are thirsty. I ask in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
