Ecclesiaates 2 verse 11 (NIV)
Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done
and what I had toiled to achieve,
everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind;
nothing was gained under the sun.
Solomon was granted wisdom from God, and many material blessings, but in the book of Ecclesiastes, he appears to have lost his direction. There is an attitude in this verse that suggests he has forgotten that what he has was given to him by God. It wasn’t all the work of his own hands. Perhaps if he hadn’t lost his focus on the God who provided, he wouldn’t have felt so jaded or disheartened. In his reflections on today’s Bible portion in Ecclesiastes, Nicky Gumbel writes, “Ecclesiastes raises the questions that the New Testament answers. Meaning is found not ‘under the sun’, but in the Son.” As the old Christian song says, “Jesus is the answer for the world today…”
Dear Lord,
We see how people today can become disillusioned when they can’t find satisfaction in the material things they have chased after. Life as You intend for us is found in Jesus, who came that we might have life and that more abundantly. Lord Jesus help me keep my eyes fixed on You. Amen.
