10 May 2023- What have I learned today?

Judges Chapter 11: Verses 4-10 (NIV)

Some time later, when the Ammonites were fighting against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to get Jephthah from the land of Tob.  “Come,” they said, “be our commander, so we can fight the Ammonites.”

Jephthah said to them, “Didn’t you hate me and drive me from my father’s house? Why do you come to me now, when you’re in trouble?”

The elders of Gilead said to him, “Nevertheless, we are turning to you now; come with us to fight the Ammonites, and you will be head over all of us who live in Gilead.”

Jephthah answered, “Suppose you take me back to fight the Ammonites and the Lord gives them to me—will I really be your head?”

The elders of Gilead replied, “The Lord is our witness; we will certainly do as you say.”

Romans Chapter 2: Verse 11 (NIV)

For God does not show favoritism.

Jephthah didn’t have the best start as a young man because of his family circumstances, none of which he could help. He was looked down on and sent away. But God isn’t concerned with status, and He had other plans. Jephthah was initially sceptical at the apparent change of heart, however his critics had to eat humble pie. He could have chosen to reject their request after all that had happened. Many in that situation would have. But he swallowed his pride and went back to the aid of his clan.

God has a plan for all of us and it may appear at times that things can’t possibly work out the way He intended. But in God’s time His plans will come to pass. However, we need to be obedient to what God asks, and perhaps that might involve swallowing our pride. Those who may have mocked or stood in our way might also have to do the same.

God is more interested in our obedience than our status!

Dear Lord,

I am thankful that You are no respecter of persons and You have a plan for us all. Help me never to show favouritism, but to be obedient to Your will and encouraging to others no matter what their background. I ask in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
