6 June 2023 – What have I learned today?

1 Samuel Chapter 20 Verse 14-15 (NIV)

But show me unfailing kindness like the Lord’s kindness as long as I live, so that I may not be killed,  and do not ever cut off your kindness from my family—not even when the Lord has cut off every one of David’s enemies from the face of the earth.”

2 Samuel Chapter 9: Verse 1 (NIV)

David asked, “Is there anyone still left of the house of Saul to whom I can show kindness for Jonathan’s sake?”
When David was still in Saul’s service, he promised Saul’s son, his dearest friend Jonathan that he would always look after Jonathan’s family should anything happen to Jonathan. At the time of Saul and Jonathan’s deaths, Jonathan’s son was a wee lad of about five. Now David is King of Israel and living in Jerusalem, the boy has grown up and now has a son of his own. David is now in a position to fulfil his promise to Jonathan, and he does.

In Proverbs Chapter 20, verse 25, it tells us we should not make rash promises without considering the implications. That applies whether it’s a promise we make to God or to anyone else. God wants obedience from us, not fancy words. God always keeps His promises to us but they are outworked in His time. We need to be careful what we promise and be sure that we fulfil it.

Dear Lord,

I thank You that I can trust You to keep all Your promises. Help me to consider all my words and actions and only make a promise as I feel led by Your Spirit. I ask in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
