Acts Chapter 6: Verses 2-3 (NIV)
So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, “It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables. Brothers and sisters, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them.”
Acts Chapter 6: verse 10 (NIV)
But they could not stand up against the wisdom the Spirit gave him as he spoke.
1 Corinthians Chapter 10: Verse 31 (NIV)
So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
The Church was growing and there were needs to be met. So the Disciples chose a team of followers to feed and care for the widows who had no family, particularly the Hellenistic widows who felt they had been overlooked. The team were chosen because they were full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom. Whatever the Church needs to do, even today, as ambassadors of Christ, it needs to be done under the direction of the Holy Spirit with integrity and wisdom. Also as Paul told the Corinthian Church its being done for the glory of God.
We should never think that whatever we do doesn’t leave a mark. Stephen lived out his faith and people tried to pick a fight with him, but they couldn’t stand up to his Spirit-filled wisdom so they had to resort to plotting against Him.
Everything we do as Christians should be as if we are doing it for the Lord Himself. We should aim to live our lives under the integrity and wisdom of the Holy Spirit because we can’t always succeed under our own steam.
Dear Lord,
May I too be filled with the integrity and wisdom that comes from the Holy Spirit, so that the light of Your Son Jesus can be reflected in my life. I ask in His precious Name. AMEN.
