Acts Chapter 11: Verses 22-24 (NIV)

News of this reached the church in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to Antioch. When he arrived and saw what the grace of God had done, he was glad and encouraged them all to remain true to the Lord with all their hearts. He was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith, and a great number of people were brought to the Lord.

The news from Antioch would not have reached the disciples as fast as our modern technology allows, nor would they have been able to verify what was happening, so they sent Barnabas, a trusted member of the growing church. What Barnabas found caused him to rejoice; God was at work and using those young in the faith to spread the Good News. Barnabas didn’t try to take over, or tell those ministering what to do. He simply encouraged them to carry on. And he was aptly named for his name means, “son of encouragement.”

When we hear of work being done for God in different places, it can be tempting to go and see what’s happening. But unless we are directed by God to do otherwise, our role is not to take over, but to encourage and support others in the role that they are called to. The role of an encourager should never be underestimated. Encouragement from someone can transform lives.

Dear Lord,

Help me to rejoice when I see You moving through and using others. Help me to encourage them in their work for You. I ask in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
