Proverbs Chapter 1: verses 2-5 (NLT Version)

Their purpose is to teach people wisdom and discipline,

to help them understand the insights of the wise.

Their purpose is to teach people to live disciplined and successful lives,

to help them do what is right, just and fair.

These proverbs will give insight to the simple,

knowledge and discernment to the young.

Let the wise listen to these proverbs and become even wiser.

Let those with understanding receive guidance…

The introduction in the book of Proverbs outlined the purpose of Solomon’s writing, but what it says can apply to the whole of the Bible which teaches us how God intends for us to live and how to deal with any situation that crosses our path, if we take the time to look.

Its not complicated and young and old alike can learn from it. Modern translations make it accessible to all – not just scholars – and its even available for free electronically.

What is my attitude to God’s word? Am I open to learn from it as Solomon says that I should? My old English teacher had a copy of the Bible in his cupboard and I recall him telling us that we should read it. I didn’t take up his suggestion at the time, but I hope I’m a bit wiser since then.

The more familiar we are with what the Bible says, we can sense God’s character and direction in it, the less we can be caught out. Jesus began His Ministry with a period of temptation by the devil who quoted different scripture verses to Him in an attempt to mislead. But Jesus knew both the scriptures well, and the character of His Father. He was not fooled by the devil’s misuse of scripture. The Holy Spirit will teach us not to be fooled either by people who misquote the bible to suit their own ends. But we need to spend time with God’s word to be comfortable with handling it ourselves.

It is always relevant to everyday life. An old Pastor I knew used to say the Bible was as up-to-date as today’s newspaper. I was just a young lass at the time, but now many years on, I heartily agree with him.

Dear God,

Thank you for the blessing of Your word and the freedom I have to access it – something I should never take for granted.

I pray for those Christians who are not so fortunate to have access to a Bible and for the Holy Spirit’s special teaching and anointing for them.

I ask in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
