31 July 2023 – What have I learned today?

Proverbs Chapter 19: Verse 2 (NIV)

Desire without knowledge is not good—

how much more will hasty feet miss the way!

Luke Chapter 14: Verse 28 (NIV)

“Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it?”

Solomon reminds us not to let impulse rule our decisions, even if it’s in regard to something which we think we really want. How many of us have made an impulse buy that hangs unworn in our wardrobe? Or believed the advert for that “must have” gadget that now takes up space, unused, in our cupboard? I have to hold my hand up and say yes.

Big decisions should never be made in a hurry without considering any implications or consequences. Sometimes when we make a decision without thinking things through, we find ourselves on the wrong road. But Jesus reminded His disciples to weigh up the cost before taking a particular course of action, and so then should we. God does not criticise us for taking time to make big decisions, indeed the best thing we can do is take the decisions to Him and seek His counsel. King David very often sought God’s advice on a plan of action before heading into battle. Indeed, the times when he didn’t were usually the times when things went wrong. We might think that some matters are to insignificant to bother God about, but if we take them to Him it would save us an awful lot of trouble!

Dear God,

Thank You that You’re interested in every aspect of my life, big and small. Help me not to leave You out of any area of my life. I know You only want the best for me. I ask in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
