1 Corinthians Chapter 1: Verses 30-31 (NIV)
It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. Therefore, as it is written: “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.”
Some people are good at setting goals and working hard to achieve them, others are more laid back and take each day as it comes. Some folks are fortunate to have great opportunities open to them, whilst others feel they have to slog hard to get them. Some people set themselves a bucket list of all the things they want to see and do, and fill their social media with lots of lovely photos of all the things they’ve done.
If we were asked to write a list of all the things we would like to accomplish, I’m fairly certain that righteousness, holiness and right standing with God would be at the top of many lists. Even if they were, these are things, that no matter how hard we try, and what opportunities we have, that we could never achieve by ourselves. Jesus had to do for us what we couldn’t do for ourselves. The cross is a great leveller, because that’s where we all need to start. Whatever we have done, up to that point, whether its good or bad, means nothing in the eyes of God. We have nothing worth boasting about to Him. The only thing worth boasting about is the work of redemption.
Dear Lord,
Thank You for making sure that we all have the same opportunity to have the redemption, righteousness and holiness that comes only from what Jesus has done for all of us. It takes the pressure off us trying to achieve what for us would be impossible. Thank You Jesus for making right standing with the Father possible. Amen.
