15 September 2023 – What have I learned today?

Psalm 107: Verses 23-30 (NIV)

Some went out on the sea in ships;
    they were merchants on the mighty waters.
 They saw the works of the Lord,
    his wonderful deeds in the deep.
For he spoke and stirred up a tempest
    that lifted high the waves.

 They mounted up to the heavens and went down to the depths;
    in their peril their courage melted away.

They reeled and staggered like drunkards;
    they were at their wits’ end.
 Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble,
    and he brought them out of their distress.
 He stilled the storm to a whisper;
    the waves of the sea were hushed.
 They were glad when it grew calm,
    and he guided them to their desired haven.

I have never noticed before the parallel between this psalm and the record of Jesus calming the storm. (Mark Chapter 4: Chapter 35-41) We might things are going well until a storm breaks on our lives and we cry out to God in our distress, That’s when we forget about our self- assurance, and we find that by His grace, the presence of Jesus is also with us in the storm. Sometimes, He calms the storm to a whisper. At other times, like this psalm, when we are at our wits end, we feel that our circumstances may overwhelm us. But, if we let Him, God will guide us through the storm, safely into the harbour where we need to be.
