1 Timothy Chapter 4: Verses 6-8 (NIV)
If you point these things out to the brothers and sisters you will be a good minister of Christ Jesus, nourished on the truths of the faith and of the good teaching that you have followed. Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.
It’s right to do what we can to make sure we look after ourselves physically and mentally. To remain healthy, we try to eat proper nourishing meals and exercise as much as we are physically able. It takes a bit of effort and deciding to make wise choices. Some of the advice and remedies out there for those of us who are trying to live healthy lives can only be described as old wives’ tales and we need to be careful of the advice we choose to follow.
But what of our spiritual health? It’s equally important. We need to make the same effort to remain spiritually healthy and nourished. We do that by finding a good church where we can join in fellowship and benefit from biblical and wise teaching. We have access to bibles which we can read for ourselves and we have access in prayer directly to God Himself. But do we do these things as regularly and faithfully as we should? If we don’t eat or drink properly, our health quickly declines, and it also suffers if we eat too much junk. If we don’t nourish ourselves properly spiritually, or we dabble in the wrong things that are bad for our spiritual health, these also have a major impact on our lives. That’s why we need to make sure we look after every area of our life, physically, mentally and spiritually, in order to live our lives the way that God intends us to.
Dear Lord,
Thank You for all of the good spiritual nourishment that is available to me. Help me to make the effort to avail myself of it, whilst being wise in what I read, listen to or watch. I ask in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
