29 November 2023 – What have I learned today?

2 Peter Chapter 3: Verses 3-4;

Above all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.”

2 Peter Chapter 3: Verses 8 -9

But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead, he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

Even back in Peter’s time, so soon after Jesus’ earthly ministry, Peter cautioned his readers to be careful of those who would mock their faith. Today it is as though he was writing to us. Many people have no respect for God’s word. And the law which was founded on the Bible is being changed little by little to ensure that anything goes; in fact, if we choose, we could probably be able to justify doing whatever we want to.

Peter reminds us however that God’s ways are not our ways. He knows what He is doing. Peter could testify of this because He saw the transforming work and power of Jesus with His own eyes. And because he did, we can trust his testimony. We may not understand why God does not move as swiftly as we think He should, but we can see from the Bible that none of the other things He has promised has fallen away. As He is patient with us, we too need to be patient with Him and put our faith into action.

Dear Lord,

I am not immune from the scoffers, but I know that neither were Jesus and the disciples. Help me to trust Your promises and the testimony of faithful servants like Peter. I ask in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
