Psalm 144: Verses 1-4 (NLT)
Praise the Lord, who is my rock.
He trains my hands for war
and gives my fingers skill for battle.
He is my loving ally and my fortress,
my tower of safety, my rescuer.
He is my shield, and I take refuge in him.
He makes the nations submit to me.
O Lord, what are human beings that you should notice them,
mere mortals that you should think about them?
For they are like a breath of air;
their days are like a passing shadow.
David’s training for kingship began whilst he was a shepherd on the hills looking after his sheep. God taught him to trust Him when David was faced with wild animals who wanted to take the sheep. He testified to this when the day came that he had to face Goliath. God will use circumstances to teach us to trust Him too; to know when to stand and fight and when to turn to Him for strength and security. He never throws us in at the deep end, and he will always have His eye on us. We need never feel alone. That is a lie of the devil who will try and isolate us from God. We are precious in God’s sight and He loves us.
How comforting to know that in the vastness and busyness of all that is going on in the world, we are not forgotten and even if no one else is paying us any attention, God is.
Dear Lord,
Help me to remember these verses when I feel like I’m in a battle and when times are hard. I have a loving ally I can turn to at any time and I am grateful. Thank You. Amen.
